How to pick a first technical skill

A way to choose one technical direction for four weeks without collecting a list of tools you will not open.

Choose the artifact first

A skill name is a folder. The work is a file inside it. Interface work leaves a page. Server work leaves one route. Analysis leaves one chart with a question in the title. Operations leaves a runbook. Checking leaves a pass and a fail. Product design leaves a flow. Basic safety leaves a check list with no attack steps. Instruction work leaves a before and an after.

If two directions both sound pleasant, pick the one whose sample you can finish on your own machine. A choice you can re-run tomorrow beats a choice that needs an account approval.

Ignore the pile of names

Tool lists grow because they are easy to copy. They do not tell you what to do at 20:00 on a weekday. For four weeks, one editor, one language or one spreadsheet, and one sample are enough. Write the names you are not learning this month at the bottom of the note so they stop interrupting.

The quiz leaned your answers toward one direction. You may disagree. Disagreement is useful if you replace the plan with a different sample, not if you keep every direction open.

Use a public, small input

Practice data should be yours or already public. A reading list, a club roster you are allowed to copy, or twenty made-up rows. Workplace exports, other people’s messages, and keys from a tutorial do not belong in a sample you might show.

When a lesson says to paste a secret into a file, stop. Use a local stand-in and write that choice into the sample. That note is part of learning how projects stay safe.

A week has one verb

Week one is “observe”: resize a page, read one route, or list the steps of a signup. Week two is “make” the smallest version. Week three is “keep” the before and the after. Week four is “hand it to someone” and fix the line they could not follow.

If a week produces only bookmarks, it did not happen. Bookmarks are allowed after the file exists.

Talk about the file

When you ask for a comment, ask about a behavior. “What happens if the name is empty?” “Which box did you not understand?” People can answer those. They cannot honestly tell you that a direction will become a career.

Keep the quiz label off the sample. The page can say what it does. It does not need a slug, a type rank, or a sentence about future pay.
